Former Dodgers scout who found Pedro Martinez, Ralph Avila, dies

Los Angeles Dodgers scout and executive Ralph Avila has passed away. He is 92 years old.

Avila joined the Los Angeles Dodgers as a Latin American scout in 1970, and since then has contributed greatly to the Dodgers recruiting players from Latin America.

Among the players he discovered were Candy Maldonado, Mariano Duncan, Omar Dahl, and Ramon Martinez and his brother Pedro Martinez. He also helped the Dodgers open a training camp in Campo Las Palmas, Dominican Republic in 1987.

In 2006, he was named Major League International Scout of the Year. He served as an advisor to the Dodgers scouting division until 2021.

His descendants also walked the path of baseball players. His son, Al Avila, served as the Detroit Tigers’ general manager from 2015 to 2022, and his grandson, Alex Avila, played catcher for 13 seasons in the majors.
