Former Barcelona and Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta is set to sign a one-year contract with Emirates Club in the UAE’s professional league, the BBC reported on Aug. 8.
Iniesta is a self-explanatory legend of Spanish soccer and world soccer. He is the centerpiece of the Spanish “tiki-taka” that once dominated world soccer. He was the best midfielder in the world.
He made his debut in 2002 with La Liga’s most prestigious club, Barcelona, and led them through their peak until 2018. He played for the Spanish national team and was a formidable ace in the middle of the ‘Invincibles’ midfield.
British global data company William Hill named him one of the best 11 players in European league history.
He won La Liga MVP in 2009 and was voted best midfielder five times. He also won the European Player of the Year award in 2012. He was named Champions League MVP for the 2011-2012 season and Euro 2012 Final MVP. He was also named to UEFA’s Team of the Year six times. He has led Barcelona to four Champions League titles and nine La Liga titles. For the national team, he led Spain to the 2010 World Cup title and was crowned European Champion twice (2008 and 2012).
After moving to the J-League, he won the J-League Player of the Year award in 2019, 2020, and 2021, and was named to the Best 11 twice. Although he was past his prime, he still dominated the game.
Last year, he said goodbye to the J-League’s Bisel Kobe, as he was unable to play many games due to frequent injuries. However, he did not retire. He will continue to play in the UAE.
