Eden Hazard is now contemplating whether or not to continue playing.
“We have reached an agreement with Azar to leave the club on June 30, 2023,” Real announced on its official website on Thursday.
During his time at Chelsea, Azar was a world-class player. After emerging as one of the most dominant players in the English Premier League (EPL), he was called up by Real to replace Cristiano Ronaldo for the 2019-20 season. Real’s investment in him was a €100 million base transfer fee with €60 million in bonus clauses. Even though the bonus clause hasn’t been triggered, it has already made Xhaka’s transfer the most expensive in Real history. The club’s most expensive player has only scored seven goals and provided 11 assists over the past four seasons.
As a result, Real have made many attempts to sell him. His salary, which can be up to 20 million euros (about $28 billion), including image rights, is a burden. There were also concerns that having a useless, high-paid player on the team could hurt the atmosphere.
But each time, Azar insisted on staying with the team. Real needed to get rid of him in order to facilitate the signing of new players, and this time, he wanted to stay. In early May, Azar said, “I hope to stay in the final year of my contract. I have a good relationship with the club and my teammates. I want to play, but I know it’s very difficult. I need to keep playing and hopefully I can play more.”
